Abstract
One fundamental task in Augmented Reality is to highlight specific real world entities or small areas in the user‘s view. For this purpose, a total of 9 novel highlighting techniques were designed and implemented. For comparison, they are complemented by two conventional techniques often used in practice. This paper presents the techniques and evaluates them based on a user study in which 23 participants were asked questions concerning the degree of attention as well as disturbances caused by the highlighting techniques. The user study revealed that particle systems are a successful tool to effectively draw attention to a highlighted entity without causing annoying distractions.
