Abstract
The current paper presents a methodology to compute and represent the ship motions at interactive frame rates, when navigating on a virtual sea defined by a real wave spectrum. The Inverse Discrete Fast Fourier Transform algorithm is used to compute the sum of all ship motions components induced by the waves and get the final irregular ship motion. Currently, this is the most efficient method to simulate the ship motions in interactive ocean simulations using wave spectra to describe the sea states. The visual realism and physical accuracy of the simulations turns this method into a powerful tool for developing interactive ship simulators.
