Abstract
This work presents an approach to detection of planar structures in three-dimensional (3D) datasets obtained by different bioimaging modalities. The strategy has already turned out to be effective to segment membranes from 3D volumes in the field of electron tomography, an emerging and powerful technique in structural and cellular biology. This approach can also be useful to detect planar structures in general in other bioimaging modalities. The goal of this position paper is to present this approach to the computer vision community and illustrate the performance on a number of representative bioimaging datasets.
