Abstract

Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks enable flexibility, low operational and maintenance costs, as well as scalability in a variety of scenarios. However, in the context of remote control and monitoring applications the use of Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks can impact the system’s performance due to several factors, such as outliers in sampled raw data, communication breakdown or owing to security issues. In order to improve the overall system’s resilience, this paper proposes a distributed hierarchical multi-agent architecture where each agent is responsible for a specific task. Experimental results collected from a laboratory test-bed show the relevance of incorporating the proposed methodology in the context of monitoring and networked control systems over Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks.
