Abstract

Where water is a scarce resource, efficient use of irrigation systems is an absolute requirement for crop management. Whilst there are many commercial systems available on the market, units typically cost hundreds of dollars or are lacking in basic data-logging capabilities. This paper describes results from trials of a minimal cost microcontroller based monitoring system designed for large scale deployment or highly cost sensitive monitoring. The system can easily be expanded to meet differing socio-economic situations.
