Abstract

The nonlinear Wiener-Hammerstein model, which consists of a static (no memory) non-linearity sandwiched between two dynamic (with memory) linear elements, provides a parsimonious and accurate model for representing a number of biological systems. In this study we compare the performance of two Wiener-Hammerstein parameter estimation methods; a commonly used nonlinear local optimisation method and the global optimisation method Differential Evolution. The accuracy and convergence properties of the two methods is tested using experimental data collected from the locusts hind limb reflex control system and using computer simulations.
