Abstract

Untreated refractive error in the eye is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness. The devices necessary for this is expensive and often requires skilled technicians to operate. In this paper, a common off the shelf ophthalmoscope has been modified and integrated with a smart phone to build an affordable optometer. The device has been tested on a statistically significant population with refractive error range from −8.00D to +3.50D. We found a reasonably good correlation with other prevalent methods of measuring refractive error in the eye.
