Abstract
The paper proposes the use of an efficient hybrid optimization routine by combining Nelder-Mead simplex with Particle Swarm algorithm (NMPSO) to synthesize a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) type controller. The conceived controller is capable of providing the best possible performance for regulating stochastic disturbances under closed loop conditions. A global optimal solution is found by exploiting the process output variance expression in terms of its closed loop impulse response coefficients. The results of which are used to define an achievable lower bound of the PID performance in terms of the output variance of the closed loop system. Several simulation examples drawn from literature are used to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methodology.
