Abstract

We investigate the emergence of co-operation through emotions. We use agents playing an iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma game, and show how the emotions of gratitude and anger enable co-operation to emerge as a response to the emotional state of the agents without reference to payoffs or history. We investigate the effect of different thresholds for these emotions to change behaviour on individual performance and system scores.
